3 Approach schools yourself
You can write to local schools, enclosing a CV,
explaining that you are applying to undertake
the Graduate Teacher Programme. If the school
has no experience or knowledge of the Graduate
Teacher Programme, please advise them to contact
us for further details and information.
4 Apply for a vacancy
If you have prior experience of teaching or if
you feel confident and able enough, you can apply
to fill a teaching vacancy in a school explaining
you are applying for the GTP. These posts can
be found advertised on the Internet. Websites
that you might like to look at include:
www.canteach.gov.uk
The TTA's website with details of how to find
a job
www.eteach.com
A teacher recruitment website
www.tes.co.uk
The Times Educational Supplement website, which
is also published on Fridays
Vacancies are advertised in the local press and
your LEA will also have details of local teaching
vacancies.
5 Check the Ofsted report of your prospective
school
It is a good idea to check the most recent Ofsted
report of your prospective school. These are available
on the Internet at www.ofsted.gov.uk.
Schools that are in special measures or that have
serious weaknesses are unlikely to be approved
as suitable places for training on their own.
If you do decide to choose a school that is in
either of these situations, you will need to undertake
a 30 day placement in a second school that is
not in special measures or does not have serious
weaknesses - preferably a beacon school.
6 What if my prospective school is a special school?
If you choose to undertake the GTP at a special
school you will need to undertake a 30-day placement
in a mainstream school. This can either be done
in one block or as one day a week, for example.
7 What if my prospective school is an independent
school?
Independent schools can train a graduate but there
is no funding available from the TTA. Either the
trainee or the school must cover all training
costs. This could amount to approximately £2800
over 12 months.
WHAT TO DO ONCE YOU HAVE FOUND A SCHOOL
Once you have secured a place, please contact
one of the offices below to inform us of the name,
address and telephone number of the school as
well as a contact person.

An interview will then be arranged, probably at
the school, for the Graduate Teacher Programme.
Subject to a successful interview the trainee
will be offered a place on the programme provided
there are appropriate places available.
The school will need to supply information such
as your proposed timetable, their experience of
Initial Teacher Training and their banking details
that are necessary to complete the application
database entry form for the TTA.
